The School Counseling Department at Fair Lawn High School is designed to help you with your academic, vocational, and personal journey. We will provide support and direction through interventions with students, faculty, administrators, parents/guardians and the Child Study Team. Through all four years of high school, your counselors will work with you to develop an individualized program that meets your academic abilities and goals.
Freshmen will begin their time at Fair Lawn High School with a Ninth Grade Transition Counselor, who will help them to acclimate to their new surroundings. Through the course of their first year, they will learn about what is required of them to graduate, develop a 4-year plan for meeting those requirements, and begin getting into the mindset of looking to their futures beyond Fair Lawn High School.
As sophomores, students will meet their new counselor, who will remain with them through graduation. They will continue to focus their future plans by completing Career Interest Inventories. The results of these surveys will help students develop realistic career goals and give them important information on how to achieve them. Juniors will begin to seriously consider their collegiate or vocational options after high school by meeting with their counselors to put together a list of potential schools and/or careers they would like to pursue. The fall is our busiest time of year as Seniors finalize their list of colleges and universities and begin sending out their applications. Seniors will meet regularly with their counselors to ensure that all their information, recommendations and applications are in order and sent out on time.
To make an appointment with your School Counselor, contact them by e-mail, fill out an appointment request form (available in the Counseling Office), or simply stop by their office. Our doors are always open!
FLHS has seven counselors: two Freshman Transition Counselors, and five 10-12 grade counselors.
The School Profile contains information about our community, student body and class offerings. It is sent to colleges each year so they can compare FL students against those from other high schools.
This document breaks down all the graduation requirements necessary to earn a diploma from FLHS.
Each year the Fair Lawn High School Counseling Department holds evening programs specifically designed to help parents in various stages of their child's high school career.
As the need has grown, so has our commitment to servicing our students' mental health needs. Here you will find a collection of websites offering information on Mental Health & Suicide Awareness resources for students, parents and staff.
Whether you plan to continue your education at a college, university, or trade school, enter the workforce, or join the military, Fair Lawn counselors are here to guide you. We’ll help you navigate your options and take the necessary steps now to set you on the path to achieving your goals.
National Collegiate Athletic Association
Student-athletes must meet specific academic and eligibility requirements to compete in college sports. This includes maintaining a certain GPA, completing required high school courses, and meeting SAT/ACT score benchmarks (for Division I and II). Registering with the NCAA Eligibility Center early in high school is crucial for those aiming to play at the collegiate level.
The school counseling department helps students explore career options, identify their strengths and interests, and develop a plan for their future. Using tools like Naviance, we guide students in understanding their personality types and potential career paths early on, giving them the best opportunity to make informed decisions about life after high school.
